Did you know that as a business owner, not only are you responsible for the safety and security of your building, equipment and other belongings and customers, but that of your employees as well? With the increasing crime rate, many businesses are being targeted for theft than ever before.
For basic commercial building security, you should at least have a monitored security system that will alert the proper responders when needed, and an access control system that will only allow personnel and other visitors you deem appropriate to enter the building.
You should also consider outside safety measures, particularly in employee parking lots . If you have employees who work late and leave when it is dark, do they have to cross a dark parking lot to access their cars? One of the best ways to keep a parking lot safe is to make it well lit. You could even ask your employees to leave in groups of two or more, especially if you have female employees so that no one walking outside at night alone. Also, depending on the location of the parking lot in regards to your business’s location, especially in high crime areas, you may want to consider having your employees’ vehicles kept in a guarded or secured parking lot. Many employers do not realize that they can be held responsible if an employee is robbed, injured or has their vehicle broken into or stolen while in the company parking lot. If you can’t afford security, then keep the lot cleared of tall shrubs or anything that would obstruct the view and any make sure it is well lit.
